Megan Hopkins is the author of Training the Next Teachers foe America: A Proposal for Reconceptualizing Teach for America. The essay uses studies to support her ideas to improve the teaching program in America. The article starts by telling about her experience going into teaching first grade. She was completely honest saying how she did feel comfortable because of the lack of preparation. I feel like this is completely true, not amount of schooling prepares you for your first teaching job. This is a completely new thing, just like any job. She then comes up with the idea that first year teachers should be paired with a veteran teacher to get the full idea. She then goes on to tell that studies shows by doing this, the new teacher will feel better prepared to teach. The article then shows the proposals made in order to better Americas teaching staff. The proposals go into great detail, which I find to be great idea. With these ideas of having teachers work with one another comes more teachers being employed. The problem with this is funding and capacity. Even though it would be great to give first year teachers more experience, which requires money the states don’t have. With pairing a new teacher with a veteran teacher come an overload of teachers being hired maxing out the capacity to pay each one of them. Overall I agree with the ideas, I just don’t know if they will work. I do agree with the author they are worth looking into.
